Establishing the Sustainable Development Committee at the university represents a pivotal step toward integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into both the academic and community spheres. It will play a key role in implementing sustainable strategies through research projects and practical initiatives that promote the preservation of natural resources. The committee will encourage the adoption of eco-friendly lifestyles and enhance the community's capacity to engage in innovative, impactful solutions that drive positive environmental outcomes. Additionally, its efforts will have a significant impact on both the academic and global communities in achieving long-term environmental and social objectives, ultimately contributing to the university’s improved standing in global rankings.

Committee Goals

  • Promoting Sustainable Education: Developing curricula that focus on environmental, social, and economic issues to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Innovation in Scientific Research: Encouraging research in fields that support sustainability, such as renewable energy, natural resource management, environmental technology, and the development of innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
  • Reducing Carbon Footprint: Adopting policies and strategies aimed at reducing carbon emissions across the campus through improved energy efficiency and the use of environmentally friendly technologies in infrastructure, transportation, and facilities.
  • Strengthening Community Partnerships: Building collaborations with public and private sectors, as well as non-governmental organizations, to achieve SDGs at both local and international levels, reinforcing the university’s role as a hub for social change.
  • Encouraging a Sustainability Culture among Students: Raising awareness of sustainability issues through educational activities, seminars, and hands-on training, guiding students toward adopting environmentally responsible lifestyles.

Committee Duties

  • Developing a Strategic Plan to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals at the University: Creating a comprehensive strategy based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that integrates sustainability into all academic, administrative, and research activities at the university. This plan will outline methods for implementing these goals both on campus and within the local community.
  • Regular Reporting on the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals: Preparing periodic reports to measure progress in achieving the SDGs at the university, including detailed analyses of gaps and achievements in environmental, social, and economic areas.
  • Launching Sustainable Initiatives in Diverse Fields: Initiating projects and programs aimed at achieving sustainability, such as developing clean energy solutions, enhancing recycling practices on campus, and supporting scientific research that contributes to innovative environmental solutions, all aligned with the SDGs.
  • Overseeing the University’s Active Participation in International Forums on Sustainable Development and the Green Economy: Engaging the university in international conferences and forums focused on sustainability and environmental protection, to strengthen the university’s role within global academic networks and share knowledge and expertise to achieve the SDGs.
  • Organizing Conferences and Seminars to Raise Community Awareness on Sustainability: Organizing academic and scientific events, such as conferences and seminars, to spotlight environmental and social sustainability issues. These events will aim to increase community awareness of the importance of transitioning to sustainable practices and encourage active participation from both the academic and general public in this transformation.
  • Measuring the University’s Environmental and Social Impact and Implementing Sustainable Improvements: Implementing mechanisms to assess the environmental and social impact of all university activities, offering recommendations for enhancing environmental and social sustainability, and ensuring that the university serves as a model for applying sustainable practices across all academic and administrative operations.
